Ultrasound
Modern high resolution scanning is now available and plays a very important role in imaging of soft tissues, tendons and ligaments. It utilises high frequency sound waves and is comfortable, real time and dynamic.
The absence of ionising radiation, and the painless non invasive nature of ultrasound make it the first-choice investigation for a large range of clinical conditions. It is a rapid, sensitive and accurate test. Ultrasound remains a technique that is operator dependent. A high level of skill, clinical and radiological experience is needed to acquire good-quality images and make accurate diagnoses. There are no contraindications to an ultrasound scan.
The ultrasound waves produce reflections from boundaries between organs and surrounding fluid, and between regions of differing tissue density and are used to visualize subcutaneous body structures including tendons, muscles, joints and vessels.
